From a small yard in Boolaroo to one of Eastern Australia’s most respected names in heavy engineering, the TW Woods story is one of family, resilience and a relentless commitment to quality. What began with a bold decision in 1963 has grown into a multi-generation business known for its large-scale steel fabrication, practical innovation and ability to get the job done.
This is the full story six decades of milestones, setbacks, solutions and growth. It’s where we’ve come from. And it’s the foundation for where we’re going next.

A Leap of Faith and the First Sparks of Industry
The TW Woods story began with a problem and a solution.
Thomas William Woods, then a foreman and electrical fitter working on the Lake Munmorah and Vales Point Power Stations, found himself at a crossroads when his employer ran into financial difficulties. Instead of stepping away, he stepped up proposing to the project managers that he start his own company and continue the contract using some of the existing workforce.
The offer was accepted. That night, he told his wife: “We’re in business.”
Power Services Pty Ltd was born in 1963. Initially focused on mechanical handling systems for power stations and the Grain Elevators Board, the company quickly earned a reputation for reliability and workmanship. By 1966, it was renamed TW Woods Construction Pty Ltd and began operating from a small yard in Boolaroo, specialising in the design and manufacture of grain conveyors and chutes.
More than 50 installations followed across NSW the beginning of a business built on action, not ego.
Building Capability In-House and Taking on Bigger Jobs
The 1970s marked a deliberate shift in strategy. Rather than outsource key services, TW Woods began bringing capability in-house to improve quality, reduce reliance on third parties and control project delivery from end to end.
They set up a machine shop for conveyor pulleys, invested in press brakes, and eventually added their own abrasive blasting and painting facilities. This decision became a cornerstone of the business and remains a defining trait today.
Then came a major win:
In 1970, TW Woods secured a $1 million contract for the mechanical handling plant at Glebe Island Terminal in Sydney. The three-year project confirmed TW Woods as a serious player in the sector delivering complex infrastructure with precision and confidence.
But success didn’t lead to complacency. As demand shifted, TW Woods pivoted once again.

From Repair to Reinvention and a New Home in Tomago
When demand for mechanical handling slowed, TW Woods moved into mining machinery repairs stripping and restoring continuous miners, shuttle cars and other underground equipment. This became the company’s core business for over 15 years, stabilising the business and keeping the team employed during uncertain times.
During this period, TW Woods made another bold move purchasing land in Tomago, becoming the first industrial tenant in what is now one of the region’s busiest manufacturing hubs. It was here that the company expanded from fitting and machining into heavy steel fabrication, unlocking opportunities in mining, infrastructure, transport and beyond.
And that wasn’t the only frontier.
Patents Police Boats and the deep sea
As TW Woods expanded its fabrication footprint, it also dipped its toe quite literally into uncharted waters.
Company founder Tom Woods designed and built his first boat: Venus, a 40ft game fishing cruiser made using an unconventional clinker-moulded steel hull. Industry experts said it wouldn’t work. Tom proved otherwise patenting the design, which soon caught the eye of the NSW Police. Three clinker-hull police boats followed, serving the state for 18 years.
Then came the submarine. Built for offshore oil rig inspection work in the US, the bright yellow “Daffy Duck” was a deep-sea vessel designed for underwater surveying. During testing, the cable connecting it to the trawler snapped, sending it to the ocean floor never to be seen again.
Despite the loss, the project showcased TW Woods’ fearless approach to complex fabrication challenges.
Consolidation and Commitment to Craft
By the early 2000s, TW Woods made a pivotal decision: close the original Boolaroo yard and consolidate all operations at the purpose-built Tomago site. This move modernised the business, improved workflow and enabled even greater control over end-to-end delivery.
It also laid the groundwork for expansion into major fabrication projects for the mining, defence, marine and energy sectors as well as the company’s reputation for practical problem-solving and long-term client partnerships.
Capability, Confidence and the Next Chapter
The past decade at TW Woods has been defined by progress building on our legacy of craftsmanship while investing in the people, systems and capabilities to thrive into the future.
A major leap was the implementation of an enterprise-wide ERP system to streamline quoting, manufacturing and job tracking. Together with Smartsheet for collaborative planning, these tools transformed how work flows across the business. Alongside this digital shift, we strengthened our compliance and quality systems: achieving ISO 9001 certification, upgrading WHS systems, and gaining PCCP accreditation. We also added in-house expertise with a certified AMPP coatings inspector, reinforcing our attention to detail.
Strategically, we established an Advisory Board to support long-term growth and innovation. Investment in apprenticeships, training and leadership development continued, with the next generation stepping up to lead honouring our roots while driving change.
We expanded into new sectors including renewables, battery storage, waste management, and large-scale tank fabrication taking on complex jobs across energy, infrastructure and heavy industry. Capabilities such as 3D modelling, DEM flow simulation and a temperature-controlled paint booth enhanced our end-to-end service offering.
In 2024, TW Woods was proud to be named a finalist in multiple Hunter Manufacturing Award categories, with Jamie Woods taking home the Rising Star of the Year award a moment of reflection and pride.
From major infrastructure to future-facing energy solutions, the past decade has been about embracing what’s next with the same practical mindset that’s guided us since day one.

A Word from the Woods Family
“This business was built on doing what others thought couldn’t be done. Our dad always said: if you want something done right, do it yourself and that’s how we’ve run the business ever since. Three generations later, we’re still proud to call it ours.”
